Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is about the way in which we manage our emotions in order to improve the quality of our lives. By understanding our emotions just that little bit better, we can begin to anticipate which emotions will surface in which situations and how they will affect us. This is the first step we can take in actually being able to work with them, rather than being consumed by them.

Fear may be defined as False Evidence Appearing Real, but it could also be said to be as a result of a lack of understanding. The less we understand our emotions and the important role they play in our lives, the more we fear them and the more we risk being overcome by them. Part of the reason for running this workshop is to give delegates the space to explore their emotions in a meaningful way, and with a view to increasing their level of understanding regarding why they sometimes feel the way they do. Developing this crucial understanding helps to create a distance between the self and the emotion, which is one of the first steps to being able to manage it.

The Emotional Intelligence workshop looks at the triangular relationship between our emotions, our thinking and our behaviour and how each influences the other. It is also designed to assist delegates develop critical thinking around the area of their emotional intelligence - a useful skill in being able to assess the impact our emotions have on our lives. One of the aims of the workshop is to demonstrate to delegates why it is deemed unhelpful to suppress or bottle up emotions - as this can lead to physical as well as psychological difficulties - and why it is more useful to attempt to understand our emotions, and where appropriate, let them go.

The upshot is that certain of our emotions, if not dealt with appropriately, could fester, and later manifest themselves in ways that can be damaging not only for ourselves but for those closest to us. Not all those around us, however, may be able, or necessarily equipped, to deal with any possible outburst that could ensue.
